Сонет 136. Оригинальный текст
If thy soul check thee that I come so near,
Swear to thy blind soul that I was thy Will,
And will thy soul knows is admitted there;
Thus far for love, my love-suit, sweet, fulfil.
Will will fulfil the treasure of thy love,
Ay, fill it full with wills, and my will one.
In things of great receipt with ease we prove
Among a number one is reckoned none:
Then in the number let me-pass untold,
Though in thy store’s account I one must be;
For nothing hold me, so it please thee hold
That nothing me, a something sweet to thee.
Make but my name thy love, and love that still,
And then thou lovest me for my name is Will.

Отношения с адресатом в сонете 136 носят явно плотский характер: «так выполнить иск сладкой любви – Thus far for love, my love-suit, sweet, fulfil».

Поэтому его адресат – возлюбленная поэта.

В остальном также нет противоречий с сонетом 135.

Продолжается игра смыслами «Will/will», что указывает на преемственность порядка написания, но упоминаний друга нет.

Сонет 137

Отсутствует обращение к адресату.

Значит, перед нами снова философский сонет, посвящённый возлюбленной.

Характер представленных отношений неявно указывает на неё, так как выразить суждение, например, о друге фразой: «чтоб светлым стал такой отвратный лик – To put fair truth upon so foul a face», для поэта невозможно.

Сонет 137. Оригинальный текст
Thou blind fool, Love, what dost thou to mine eyes,
That they behold, and see not what they see?
They know what beauty is, see where it lies,
Yet what the best is take the worst to be.
If eyes, corrupt by over-partial looks,
Be anchored in the bay where all men ride,
Why of eyes’ falsehood hast thou forged hooks,
Whereto the judgement of my heart is tied?
Why should my heart think that a several plot,
Which my heart knows the wide world’s common place?
Or mine eyes seeing this, say this is not,
To put fair truth upon so foul a face?
In things right true my heart and eyes have erred,
And to this false plague are they now transferred.

Очевидно, что и другие нелицеприятные намёки в сонете относятся к возлюбленной, поэтому этот сонет, наверняка, не был ей показан.

Поэту было необходимо время для осмысления своей настойчивости в притязаниях на возлюбленную.

Опять видим те же размышления о внешности и душевных качествах, как отголоски сонетов 129 и 130, ведь опять присутствуют ссылки на чужие пристрастные мнения: «если предвзятые взгляды вредят глазам – If eyes, corrupt by over-partial looks», которые теперь подтвердились: «пред истиной глаза и сердце лгут – In things right true my heart and eyes have erred».

Но несмотря на очевидное, поэт не может разорвать отношения с возлюбленной, ищет повод их продолжать и находит этому объяснение в болезни своих глаз и сердца «напастью лжи».

Сонет 138

Снова перед нами философский сонет, посвящённый возлюбленной, так как «она» упоминается в третьем лице: «когда любимая клянётся, что она верна – When my love swears that she is made of truth».

Противоречий с предыдущим сонетом нет.

Прямые упоминания друга отсутствуют.

When my love swears that she is made of truth,
I do believe her, though I know she lies,
That she might think me some untutored youth,
Unlearned in the world’s false subtleties.
Thus vainly thinking that she thinks me young,
Although she knows my days are past the best,
Simply I credit her false-speaking tongue:
On both sides thus is simple truth suppressed.
But wherefore says she not she is unjust?
And wherefore say not I that I am old?
O, love’s best habit is in seeming trust,
And age in love loves not t’have years told.
Therefore I lie with her, and she with me,
And in our faults by lies we flattered be.

Сонет 139

Обращение к адресату возобновилось, что указывает на личное общение.

В сонете показана и обыграна с разных сторон «хитрость» адресата украдкой смотреть на других во время общения с поэтом, что указывает на женщину: «дорогое сердце, не скользи взглядом мимо – Dear heart, forbear to glance thine eye aside».

Противоречий с предыдущими сонетами нет. Прямые упоминания друга отсутствуют. Адресат – возлюбленная поэта.

That thy unkindness lays upon my heart;
Wound me not with thine eye but with thy tongue;
Use power with power, and slay me not by art.
