Сонет 140

Отношения с возлюбленной остаются далёкими от идеальных: «не угнетай, разумно будь жестока – Be wise as thou art cruel, do not press», что указывает на преемственность обстоятельств и того же адресата – возлюбленную поэта.

My tongue-tied patience with too much disdain,
Lest sorrow lend me words, and words express
The manner of my pity-wanting pain.
If I might teach thee wit, better it were,
Though not to love, yet, love, to tell me so —

No news but health from their physicians know.
For if I should despair, I should grow mad,
And in my madness might speak ill of thee;
Now this ill-wresting world is grown so bad,
Mad slanderers by mad ears believed be,
That I may not be so, nor thou belied,
Bear thine eyes straight, though thy proud heart go wide.

Поэт продолжает выступать в роли то ли просителя, то ли учителя, но возлюбленная его игнорирует.

Поэт «в отчаянье». Он предупреждает о «лживых словах» о ней, которых он не хотел бы найти в своём горе, но возлюбленная его к этому может вынудить.

В замке сонета 140 поэт даёт рецепт того, как возлюбленная могла бы остановить такую ложь – посмотреть на него, а не на другого.

Этим предвосхищается следующий сонет 141, где о возлюбленной поэт выскажет несколько нелицеприятных слов. Упоминания друга отсутствуют.

Сонет 141

Сомнений по поводу адресата – возлюбленной поэта, не возникает, ведь плотский характер отношений выражен явно на всём протяжении сонета, например: «ни нежное ощупывание в положении лёжа – Nor tender feeling to base touches prone». Упоминания друга отсутствуют.

Сонет 142

Преемственность от сонета 141 обстоятельств и адресата очевидны. Плотский характер отношений сомнений не вызывает: «чужие спальни их лишая рент – Robbed others’ beds’ revenues of their rents».

Упоминания друга отсутствуют.

Love is my sin, and thy dear virtue hate,
Hate of my sin, grounded on sinful loving.

Robbed others’ beds’ revenues of their rents.

Whom thine eyes woo as mine importune thee:
Root pity in thy heart, that when it grows
Thy pity may deserve to pitied be.
If thou dost seek to have what thou dost hide,
By self-example mayst thou be denied.

Сонет 143

Женский род адресата назван прямо в первой же строке: «как добрая хозяйка став ловить – Lo, as a careful housewife runs to catch».

Обстоятельства и смысл сонета не противоречат предыдущим.

Опять, как в сонете 135, упомянуто имя друга – «Уилл».

Sets down her babe and makes all swift dispatch
In pursuit of the thing she would have stay,
Whilst her neglected child holds her in chase,
Cries to catch her whose busy care is bent

So runn’st thou after that which flies from thee,
Whilst I, thy babe, chase thee afar behind;
But if thou catch thy hope, turn back to me,
And play the mother’s part, kiss me, be kind:
So will I pray that thou mayst have thy Will,

Подводя итог, можно заметить, что признаком, который, наряду с другими, позволит обосновать параллельное написание сонетов, является отсутствие прямых упоминаний друга на этом отрезке. Как именно этот признак нам в этом поможет будет подробно показано в отдельной главе, посвящённой этому вопросу. Косвенные упоминания и намёки не учитываются в признаке.
