Just wait and see.” He stepped closer to her, and in the frigid night air she could feel the warmth emanating off his body, smell the scent of hay and horseflesh on him. He touched her cheek. “I want you to know this,” he said, his voice low. “I want you to know you can tell me anything.”

He just didn’t know. That was the one thing she couldn’t do.
