Cedric invited the Prior and the Templar to sit beside him at the head of the table. The pilgrim, however, said he preferred to have his supper standing by the great fireplace, away from all the other guests.

When Gurth and Wamba came into the great hall a little while later, the Templar recognized them from the forest.

“I only made a small mistake,” the jester replied. “Someone who asks a fool for directions should be able to forgive that.”

When the Lady Rowena came into the hall at last, everyone stood up. She was a tall young woman with a beautiful face and clear blue eyes. The Prior noticed that the Templar was staring at her Saxon beauty.

He warned the Templar that Cedric had banished his own son for looking at Rowena in the same way. Cedric had promised his ward to Athelstane of Coningsburgh, a Saxon of royal blood. Nobody else, not even his own son, would be allowed to marry her.

“What is the latest news from the Holy Land?” she asked the Templar.

“Yes,” replied the pilgrim from his dark corner beside the fireplace, “there were many very famous knights who fought with our brave King, but none of them were Templars! One of the knights with King Richard was young and less well known, however, and I don’t remember his name.”

Everyone raised their cups together with Cedric and cheered for the Lady Rowena.

That evening, when the guests were being shown to their rooms at Rotherwood, the Templar stopped the old Jew in the corridor.

“Unbelieving dog!” he said to Isaac. “So you are on your way to see the tournament at Ashby? I’m sure that you have a lot of money hidden away somewhere.”

“Money (денег)? But I am a poor man (но я бедный человек)!” exclaimed Isaac (воскликнул Исаак). “Even the clothes that I wear (даже одежда, которую я ношу) are borrowed from a friend (занята у друга; to borrow – занимать, брать на время).”

I understand Arabic (я понимаю арабский), and this evening I overheard the Templar tell his men (и сегодня вечером я услышал, как тамплиер говорит своим людям; to overhear – подслушивать; нечаянно услышать) to kill you on the road to Ashby tomorrow (убить вас по дороге в Эшби завтра).
